About Us

Club President's Message

I would like to welcome everyone to this wonderful club and hobby! Here at WMFC, we strive to welcome pilots of all types.

Whether you fly sport planes, 3D, Warbirds, jets or copters, we want you to feel welcome and at home with our members and facility.

We welcome pilots of all ages and genders. Our focus lies in relaxation and fun. We provide guidance for pilots both new and experienced.

Improvements to our field are continuous, and safety is in mind at all times. We strictly adhere to Academy of Model Aeronautics (AMA) and FAA rules and regs.

When you arrive for the first time, make yourself at home and see how friendly and helpful our club can be.

Again, Welcome!

Club History

The Wilmington Model Flying Club was established in 2008 by a small but dedicated group of local RC aviation enthusiasts. In its early years, the club flew at Morris Field off Highway 421 (2008–2010) and also utilized Olsen Field during 2008–2009.

In 2010, the club relocated to Highsmith Field, which continues to serve as its permanent flying site today. This move provided long-term stability and allowed the club to further develop its facilities and membership base.

A significant milestone came in 2017 when the club was officially chartered with the Academy of Model Aeronautics (AMA #489), strengthening its commitment to national safety standards and organized model aviation. In 2023, Highsmith Field received FAA FRIA certification, ensuring continued compliance with evolving federal regulations for recreational flyers.

Throughout its history, the club has remained active in the community, participating in outreach events and promoting safe, responsible model aviation.

Since its founding with 42 members in 2008, the club has steadily grown and now proudly supports approximately 70 members in 2025—reflecting its strong leadership, welcoming atmosphere, and ongoing commitment to the hobby.
